Heirloom Apple Pie

Nothing beats a homemade apple pie, still warm from the oven and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped topping. This recipe, using heirloom apples offers everything you want from a pie – a flaky, buttery crust and the tender, sweet  crunch from one of our favorite seasonal fruits. Oh, and the best part any pie is perfect for sharing. 


Heirloom Apple Pie


2 prepared 9” Pie Crusts

6 Heirloom Apples / peeled, seeded, and diced

¾ C Brown Sugar

2 T All-Purpose Flour

¾ t Cinnamon

1/8 t Nutmeg

¼ t Salt

1 T Lemon Juice

1 Egg / lightly beaten

2 T Turbinado Cane Sugar

Optional: Vanilla Ice Cream or freshly whipped topping



Preheat oven to 350°F.

Place one pie crust into a 9” pie mold. Press firmly to adhere to the sides.

Mix the apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice together and pour into crust.

Lay the second pie crust flat on a cutting board. Slice into 1” strips. Place the strips on top of the pie in a pattern of your choice. Lightly brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with turbinado cane sugar.

Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown. Let rest on a cooking rack for two hours before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream for a slice a la mode!
